~Cost of Living~

Does it cost more to live in Grande Praire?  Is it worth it? How much is milk?  Gas? Rent?  I know some of these questions can drive you mad when you are trying to make the decision to uproot your family from wherever and move here.  Here is my personal opinion on this matter (well this whole blog is my personal opinion isn't it now?) anyhow I digress!  Yes it is more expensive to live here.  No doubt about it.  Gas hovers around $1.09 to $1.34 a Litre depending on the season and whether the refineries are down and roads are bad...yup that happens.  The bigger problem than the cost of gas is the fact that you need to drive almost 10 hours round trip to the nearest large city (Edmonton) and most likely you will upgrade your vehicle to an SUV which will cost more to drive.  Why will you upgrade your vehicle to an SUV?  Sure you love your little car;  it's economical, low payments (or paid off) and fits your family.  Let me illustrate:

Yeah, it snows a lot here.  Not to say that people don't drive cars here, they do.  I don't.  I drive a huge, gas guzzling SUV.  You see not only does that keep me feeling safer on the road and able to get out of more tricky spots, it also allows us to get to Edmonton with our two kids without having to strap one to the roof to fit all our stuff.  Everyone knows when you travel with kids half the house comes too!  So plan for it, you're going to want to get a bigger vehicle.

Food.  Is it more expensive in Grande Prairie?  Well considering it needs to be brought in and we are a far ways away from major centers...yup, it costs more.  It's not as expensive as Ft Nelson, BC ( I lived there one winter) however it is more expensive than Edmonton.  Its hard to say how much more because I've lived here for so long it's just normal. A jug of milk will run you $4.89 at Costco.  I cook 95% of our family meals from scratch (ie. not processed foods, fresh meat and veggies) and our grocery bill is around $650 a month for a family of 4 for 3 meals a day and snacks.

We have many grocery stores here you can shop at:  Superstore (Loblaws), Safeway, IGA, Save On Foods (Overwaitea), Costco, Walmart Grocery Shelf  and No Frills (Loblaws).  There are also a couple of great butcher shops in town, I get most of my meat from Blackman's Butcher Shop, I find they have the best selection and great quality.    M&M meat shops have 2 locations here as well and there are specialy bakeries available too.  The Farmer's Market has great produce available from local producers seasonally as well.

Rent/Housing:  Our market is hot here!  I HIGHLY suggest you look into where you are going to live before you head this way.  We have a VERY low availability of rental units here and sometimes there is virtually nothing available.  There are many homes converted into two suites that are rented out here as well as rooms for rent in personal homes.  A basement suite can run you anywhere from $900 to $1200 a month and a full house will run you $1600-$3500 depending on size, furnished or unfurnished and if you sign a lease.  I will do a more in depth post on rental opportunities as well as hopefully feature some property management companies that you can get more information from.  Please feel free to email me if you are a property management company and are interested in being featured.  Kijiji is a great resource on rentals and real estate for this area.

If you are looking to buy here don't be scared of the market.  It's hot but has stayed hot for many years with only a slight dip with the last recession.  Average house prices as of June 2013 are $302,384 and are rising up as lots become more scarce.  You are best to work with an experience realtor that knows the city and has done business here for many years.  They can help you navigate areas of town that would be a good fit for your family and be able to steer you out of areas with known problems.  I would happily refer anyone to Joan Prankie with Royal Lepage, we have bought 3 homes through her now and sold 2.  She has over 13 years of experience in real estate here and brings practical, no nonsense information to her clients.

So to answer the question, yes it costs more to live here.  But you do make more money here, on average $126,877 per household.  And you shouldn't have ANY problem finding a job here, which I will discuss soon!

Disclosure:  I provide opinions on businesses or services and they are my own. I have not been paid by Blackman's or Joan Prankie for my opinion, they just have great products and service, that's it!

~Amenities in Grande Prairie Part 1~

One thing I appreciate about Grande Prairie is the amenities that they have that make life more enjoyable and bearable given we are so remote.  The city owns many great facilities that will prevent you from being bored living here.  Here is an overview of some of the amenities available, more will come in future posts.

The Montrose Cultural Centre which includes the Grande Prairie Public Library, The Prairie Art Gallery and the Teresa Sargent Hall. Esquire's Coffee is located inside as well where you will be served up a local cup of your caffeinated (or decaf if you go that way) beverage and a variety of sweets and savory treats to satisfy your craving.  A bright and inviting seating area indoors and a relaxing outdoor seating area are a great place to enjoy a fresh book and a cup of joe.

I very much enjoy this facilily, the Public library is top notch with a children's library area on the top floor, half for youth, half for younger children.  The main floor is complete with computers with internet access, reference books, fiction books, magazines, a study room, classroom, a fireplace seating area, and many comfortable chairs and study areas throughout.  The staff are top notch and they run great programs for all age groups.

The Prairie Art Gallery is a home to the largest public art collection in the Peace Region.  It is FREE for anyone to go and check out both the permanent and traveling exhibitions that are on display.  They have self guided tours available for groups as well.

Knowledge Campus:
Is a multi-funciton campus that includes The Eastlink Centre, The Coca Cola Centre, The Gymniks Gymnastics Club and the St Joseph High School.  Presently a Public High school is being built as well, opening 2014 or 2015.

The Eastlink Centre is a fabulous facility that I will most definitely expand on in another post.  It is a barrier free facility that provides a mix of aquatics and field sports activities that can accommodate every type of athlete.  There is something for the whole family here to provide an active, fun time.  The Eastlink Centre also houses Wannawafel, Second Cup, Titos Bistro, Ernies Sports Experts, Jugo Juice, Ready, Set Dance and Ultimate Health covering every aspect of health and wellness.  Our family is at The Eastlink Centre on average 3 times a week.  It really is a premier facility.

The Coca Cola Centre is home to two national league sized ice rinks with spectator seating.  They have drop in shinny and hockey nights as well as seasonal camps available.  Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Hockey games all take place here.

The Gymniks Gymnastics Club conducts classes for pre-schoolers through adults in both fun and competitive avenues.   It can be very difficult to get registered however as it is a very sought after club.

The Crystal Centre
Is home to the Grande Prairie Storm, our Junior League Hockey Team and a Events Center that boast great entertainment and sports venues throughout the year for the whole family.  Sir Elton John even played here last year!

Dave Barr Community Centre
This community centre offers skating and hockey in the winter months and ball hockey and lacrosse in the summer.  There is also a preschool program, and kids camps that run here regularly.

Grande Prairie Museum
Located in Muskoskeepi Park it tells the story of Grande Prairie's heritage and culture through exhibitions and displays.  They also offer educational programs and tours on a regular basis.  One of my favorite events that is held at the museum is the Maple Sugar festival in the spring.  There are many family friendly and educational things to do!

Muskoskeepi Park
This park is in the heart of Grande Prairie and covers approx 1100 acres.  It has many specific use areas throughout the park that keep it hopping all year long.  Some things you will find here are mini golf, a splash park, BMX bike area, walking trails, lawn bowling, a stocked fishing pond, ice skating in winter, snowshoes, and 'Thrill Hill' toboggan hill.  Bear Creek Outdoor pool is also here however it is closed this year (2013) for upgrades and repairs.

There are unlimited opportunities for fun at the park.  The Park Pavillion, in the heart of the park, also offers various concerts, events, classes, camps and activities throughout the year.  Some highlights are The Easter Eggstravaganza, Canada Day celebrations and Winterlude Family Day.

The Park Pavillion in the heart of the park
A beautiful fall view of Bear Creek for which the park is named.  'Muskoskeepi' is a Cree Word meaning Bear.

I think its clear that Grande Prairie's amenities are geared towards an active, cultural lifestyle;  probably not what you would expect from a remote Northern community!  The city does a great job of providing a place for families to live and grow and have fun.  They are constantly hosting events that are usually free or low cost to participate in.

  • There are many lakes, rivers and camping opportunities around Grande Prairie and within a couple of hours.
Shopping:
Grande Prairie is a quickly growing city.  We have gained many large retailers that similar sized cities do not have.  For example we have a brand new or soon to open Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Home Sense, Bulk Barn.  Existing stores include Costco, Home Depot, Walmart, Future Shop, Best Buy, Lulemon, Winners, Micheals, Jysk, Staples just to name a few.  Major clothing retailers are here as well:  Reitmans, Penningtons, RW & Co, Smart Set, Rickis, Garage, Boathouse, Children's Place, Stitches, Bootlegger are some of the ones that come to mind.  We have a fantastic group of boutique specialty merchants in town as well that bring in products and brands that are hard to find in some cities!  Sole Addiction is a specialty shoe store that keeps all the ladies in town in the finest shoes.  Propellor & Co carries unique, graceful and stylish clothing and various things for around the home.  Ernie's Sports Experts sells all the sports, fitness and active equipment you could ever need for an active life.  Fashionista will keep you looking stylish at the various balls, formals and events that happen in Grande Prairie regularly.  There are many more independent retailers in town and I hope to feature them all in an effort to promote shopping local and supporting their business.  If you are one of those businesses or are interested in being featured on this site please feel free to email me.

Dining:
We have a wide variety of cuisines and restaurants to chose from in Grande Prairie.  With our high incomes and busy lifestyles eating out is very common in town so restaurants are busy!  Some chain restaurants in town include The Keg, Moxies, Earls, Original Joes, Swiss Chalet, Denny's, Tony Roma's, Ric's Grill.  Fast food options are plentiful with McDonald's, Arby's Wendy's, Carl's Junior, Fatburger, Five Guys, Opa, Edo Japan, Mucho Burrito, Taco Time, A&W and many more.  Some local favorites and locally owned and managed restaurants include:  Jeffrey's Cafe  , Guerino's Italian Kitchen, El Norteno , Hong Fah Thai, Escape Bistro.  There are many more and again I hope to feature them all on this blog!

As you can see Grande Prairie, while a bit remote does have many amenities and great demographics that do draw many people to move here.  I will be posting soon about cost of living and other amenities available here, please keep reading!
